This degree was previously known as Master of Internet Communications.
The Master of Digital and Social Media provides you with an opportunity to learn in detail about the human dimensions of the Internet: how people network, collaborate, and share information through Internet communications, media and design. You will develop advanced skills in creating, maintaining and managing online communications for personal and commercial interactions, as well as gaining knowledge of the social and cultural contexts within which those interactions occur. You will also gain advanced research skills through a substantial independent research project. The approach is interdisciplinary: you develop skills in websites, public communication, social network management, collaboration via virtual organisations, and web media production. At the same time you will understand the political, economic and social changes associated with the Internet. By taking this degree, you will add to your existing qualification the knowledge and skills needed for you to become an astute, engaged professional communicator via the Internet.

This subject is the second of two Masters project subjects involving supervised independent research in/of a discipline-relevant topic. This subject focuses on the completion and presentation of the research commenced in HUMN600 Masters Research Project 1, and will be taken in the next available study period following that subject. The specific nature of the project, the methods of research and the submission format will be determined in consultation with a discipline supervisor and may include professionally orientated tasks or components. The chosen research work involves supervised completion of a dissertation or creative project with exegesis.﻿Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject, you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. It only takes two hours to complete online and provides you with vital information about studying with Curtin University. Masters Research Project 2

The first of two supervised independent Masters project subjects involving detailed research in/of a topic to be chosen in consultation with the relevant discipline supervisor. This subject focuses on the preparation and design of that research, and must be taken prior to HUMN610 Masters Research Project 2. Masters Research Project 1

This subject allows students to develop advanced writing techniques and creative artefact planning skills  through the production of a major piece of work for publication. It will also extend students’ knowledge about a range of writing genres and insights into the writing process. It exposes students to the many different approaches to the practice of writing by critically appraising a range of writing practitioners and published works. It will also further develop and apply critical, theoretical and reflective understandings through the frame of practice-led research to assist in the development of a student’s own folio of original work.

Continue the development of your writing folio. Complete the artefact and exegesis that you began in Writing and Praxis: Publication Folio A (PWR80005).Research a wide range of writing genres including crime, business and short story writing.

The Creative Artefact: Publication Folio B

Students will investigate the art of visual storytelling and explore a range of techniques for the creation of story elements such as structure, character, dialogue, adaptation and layout. The subject also explores how cultural and critical theories offer frameworks for understanding film, television and multimedia.

Learn the skills behind the scripts of your favourite films and productions, including structure, character, dialogue and more. Learn to critique genres and theoretical approaches – before lifting your pen and unleashing your inner scriptwriter.

Scriptwriting

In this subject, students will learn the dimensions of research and publication in the writing of history. Students will develop the skills needed to create narratives using local, family, social or material history and to produce a piece of writing for publication in print and/or online.

Take your readers back in time as you learn about the process of researching, producing and publishing historical writing.Discuss creating fictionalised characters based on real people. Consider local, family and social approaches to history.

Writing History: People, Places and Times

In this subject, students will learn how to read, write and research a wide range of writing styles typical to those met in the degree of their work and/or life. Students will gain insight into different forms of professional writing, have access to professionals speaking about their particular form of professional writing, develop understanding of the relationship between professional writing style and target audience, and obtain skills in writing for different professional purposes.

Hone your ability to write and research materials across a variety of writing styles.Evaluate reviews, advertisements, reports, histories and scholarly discourse. Think about target audiences. Listen to lectures from working professionals.

Real Life Writing

This unit focuses on developing work for magazines that publish different genres of creative writing: literary fiction, genre fiction, and creative non-fiction periodicals that publish writing on lifestyle and entertainment topics such as food and travel. Students learn to identify markets and publication outlets. They analyse specific readerships, styles, and topical content before developing their own publication-ready projects targeting a specific market and learning how to pitch to these magazines.

Professional Contexts of Literary and Feature Writing

This unit focuses on the short-form creative writing in its evolving forms, including micro narratives and the short story , poetry cycles, the short story sequence . In addition to the weekly writing workshops, students read Australian and international short-form writing, and narrative studies texts that investigate questions of form and the relationship of the reader to the text. Students develop a critical awareness of the broader national and international contexts in which short-form writing is to published. At the conclusion of the unit, students will have produced a range of short-form creative works and a book plan.

Short Form Writing

In this practical introduction to creative non-fiction, students learn to research and write narrative non-fiction pieces such as the memoir, personal essay, travelogue, and environmental writing. We examine some of the great non-fiction essayists and analyse the local and international contexts in which these works are produced. This introductory unit is suitable for students from interdisciplinary backgrounds including creative writing, ethnography, cultural studies, journalism, philosophy and history. You devise your topics in consultation with the lecturer, and are guided in the development of skills in primary research and narrative writing techniques.

Writing Creative Non-Fiction - An Introduction

This subject was previously known as Online Games and Play.This subject explores the broader spaces and nature of play online, and how it relates to the development of digital forms of gaming. The nature of immersion, and its relationship to interactivity, is examined, investigating how narrative is constructed and communicated through game play. The subject provides critical perspectives on the notion of gamification and the growing area of research centred around videogame streamers and the labour ecosystem of eSports. It examines a series of gaming tropes and themes, games as texts, and the ways that games enter social frameworks to convey, refract, engage with, and resist power structures.
